Johannes Schemmel heads the "Electronic Vision (s)" research group. In 2008, he was also head of the ASIC laboratory at Heidelberg University. With the death of Karlheinz Meier in autumn 2018, he took over the chairmanship.
His research focus is on mixed analog-digital, highly integrated, microelectronic systems for information processing. In recent years his work has focused on the analog implementation of biologically inspired neural network models, the most famous result of which is the Heidelberg neuromorphic BrainScaleS system.: HBP work in AI and technology
